Meteora

Meteora are situated in central Greece and they are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. (http://whc.unesco.org/en/list/455). The geological phenomenon of Meteora is still a puzzle for Greek and foreign geologists. The gigantic towering cliffs, dominating over the town of Kalambaka are a unique phenomenon of beauty and an important monument of Orthodoxy.

Meteora is a truly inspiring and sensational setting of overwhelming rock formations, but one must also be prepared to expect that this trip is much more than merely visiting an exquisite landscape. It is a pilgrimage to a holy place for all Christians around the world. Meteora has become a preservation ark for the 2000-year-old Christian Orthodox creed

Sites

Meteora is a cluster of huge rocks, where monasteries are built at the tops of most of them, dating from the 11th century AD. That alone makes Meteora a unique destination in the entire world. Initially there were 30 monasteries but nowadays only 6 are open and allowed to be visited by tourists. Visitors will have the opportunity to walk up to these monasteries and admire the splendor of the place. Monasteries which are operating and accepting visitors are the following: The Holy Monastery of Great Meteoron, the Holy Monastery of Varlaam, the Holy Monastery of Rousanou/St. Barbara, the Holy Monastery of St. Nicholas Anapausas, the Holy Monastery of St. Stephen and the Monastery of the Holy Trinity.
